Welcome to South West Swimming School

Welcome to South West Swimming School, we believe that a safe and secure environment is necessary in order to develop and improve the swimming skills of our pupils. Our instructors are fully ASA qualified and in house trained to teach within the water allowing good demonstrations and greater input into the lesson.

Our directors, Kelly and Erica have over 22 years experience between them, both here and abroad. Having qualified in special needs, adult and baby/child and aqua fit to an advanced standard. Together they have designed a unique recipe of teaching.

We at South West Swimming School prioritise Health and Safety when teaching swimming.

Our policy is that all none swimmers-duckling grade 1-4 are fitted with back floats at any of our venues.
This buoyancy aid will be progressively reduced once a child is getting confident and able to float, submerge completely without assistance.

Children are making progress wearing a back float as while they are not able to float independently yet, they can learn how to kick, pull and also learn basic breathing technique.

All SWSS teachers are carefully selected for their teaching quality, knowledge and experience.

National Plan for Teaching Swimming, powered by British Gas

The National Plan for Teaching Swimming (NPTS - Powered by British Gas) 2007 is the national syllabus produced by the ASA to assist and support the delivery of swimming lessons.

It is the most successful sports programme of its kind and the syllabus is currently being implemented in over 1,000 swimming programmes nationwide as well as being adopted overseas as a model of good practice.

The NPTS has been developed to use fun and games to take children from their first splash to full competence in the water via 10 Stages but is underpinned throughout by Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) principles, with clear progression between each stage. The programme fully encompasses all aquatic disciplines, and incorporates Rookie Lifesaving in conjunction with the Royal Life-Saving Society.

The 'swimmer pathway' resulting from the revised syllabus provides more opportunity and variety for swimmers, as well as providing a smooth, progressive structure to take them through the stages. The ASA hopes this will improve the number of swimmers who continue to learn to swim in the later stages and provide a clear link into clubs for those who have completed or progressed well through the stages of the NPTS

The National Plan for Teaching Swimming (NPTS) is an all-inclusive programme which takes the non-swimmer from his or her first splash to developing confidence and competence in the water. The National Governing Body for Swimming, the ASA, has produced a national syllabus for aquatics, in order to equip learn to swim providers with the training and tools to deliver a multi-aquatic, multi-skill programme.

The swimmer's journey through aquatics following the National Plan for Teaching Swimming will result in the development of a wide range of skills. These skills, are a jigsaw of pieces and when put together result in a competent, confident and safe swimmer who has the skill base for developing technique in a wide range of water based sports.

Do you know what WAVEPOWER is?

Club Welfare Officers are volunteers many of whom work daily with children. All Welfare Officers will have a good knowledge of the WAVEPOWER document, which is the ASA policy and guidance to safeguarding children and young people in swimming. The Welfare Officer is there for all swimmers under 18 and makes the needs of these swimmers a priority. If you have a concern about yourself or another swimmer, how you are being treated by others or something that is making you unhappy your Club Welfare Officer is there for you, or if you prefer your parent or carer to talk to.

    Now try this...

My Club Welfare Officer's name is:

Mrs Kelly Tuson or Ms Erica Pryke

    I can contact them by:

    07960 557712 or 07903655852

If you don't know ask your coach or parent to help you find out.

Also the WAVEPOWER document from 2012 has a section specifically for swimmers under the age of 18. Check it out! The Club Welfare Officer will recieve a copy or go to the ASA website at www.swimming.org
